The German Fallschirmjäger were the world's first paratroopers deployed in large numbers, spearheading daring assaults at the outbreak of World War II. From the assault on the fortress of Eben Emael in 1940 to enabling rapid armoured advances across Europe, these elite troops quickly earned a fearsome reputation.
Their greatest achievement came during the 1941 invasion of Crete, where they fought intense battles against numerically superior British and Commonwealth forces. Though ultimately victorious, the heavy casualties suffered meant that large-scale airborne operations were rarely attempted again.
Instead, smaller Fallschirmjäger units conducted daring operations, including the famous rescue of Italian leader Mussolini and raids behind Allied lines during the Ardennes Offensive. Their most legendary stand came at Monte Cassino, where they defended the monastery for months against overwhelming Allied forces, earning the nickname "Green Devils." Widely regarded as some of the toughest soldiers in the German army, Fallschirmjäger troops excelled in defensive and elite assault roles.
